I am an avid fan of Apple products having used their iMac in the past and currently use the first generation iPhone. I love my iPhone. It is a great product and something which heralded the 'Touchphone' revolution in the world. Most touchphones that are there in the market have mimicked iPhone. You get to hear this in India as you travel to the interiors of India ..."Touchphone hai kya? (Is that a touchphone)...Now you have all handset vendors jumping in.
But somethings about Apple defies logic. I was closely following up the launch of new products at the Apple Convention early this week. It was supposed to be at 10 am local CA time.
I logged on to their website on my Dell machine (Windows 7 Os and Chrome Browser) and I saw the message which meant that only those having Apple products could view the live feed of Steve Job's address at the convention.
Then I thought of trying out on my outdated First Generation iPhone, but the message there stated that I need to upgrade to next version of OS to be able to view the feed. I knew I could have hunted for the live video from other networks/websites, but I went into thinking mode thinking about Steve's strategy.
I found this to be a ridiculous idea. I know Apple products are niche. But the fact that their own ads target the PC users
I feel that it makes more sense to target the PC users who could be potential future Apple customers. (Apple must have thought about it as well, I guess....)
I posted a question on LinkedIn on this. My question was "Was Apple right in restricting the access to live video feed of new product launch by Steve Jobs yesterday to only users of iPhone, Mac, and iPad users? (only current users of Apple products)?
I have got 9 responses on my posts till now (7 of them from the US and most of them from San Francisco Bay Area, goes to show that it continues to be the biggest market for Apple products..)
Here are some interesting observations on Apple's strategy of targeting the 'existing customers'

If Apple would get off their high horse and realize that by keeping things proprietary, they are restricting their own growth... As much as I love my Mac, I can't for the life of me, figure out why Apple continues go down this path...

It is discrimination, but then again, those users have overpaid dearly for their products! ;)

I always get a huge kick out of the anti-Apple masses. The fact is, prior to the iPhone, Motorola was still pushing the RAZR on deaf ears and nobody really had a successful smart phone solution. Even with the iPad out now, Amazon and others are still pushing monochromatic displays when almost every other device we have is color.
As much as you want to knock Apple for keeping a closed gate community, it has been very successful for them, contrary to Microsoft who has taken five iterations of their operating system to actually produce a product has some sense of stability. Apple hardware continues to have a higher resell value and longer life than most PCs (please check Craigslist for pricing if you don't believe me). Hands down, it's a quality product, even if you don't agree with all the decisions that Steve Jobs makes.
I'm hardly what you would call an Apple "fan boy" because I will definitely call Apple out when they're wrong. However, they're in business to make a solid product that sells well, period. This is exactly what they're doing. Had they taken the Steve Ballmer approach to product development, they probably would have been history a lot "zuner".

I love watching the commotion that Apple provides, and the Marketing they gain by the complaints.

Absolutely - it is nice to provide such perks to their loyal users. This also fits to Apple's strategy of first selling to their existing client base. The more you watch Apple's Marketing, the more you have to respect them.

Jobs had his "sheep" there to stroke his ego and that's all he really cares about. The 1st iPad press release I follwed on techcrunch. The revised Apple product line hit the wires, moments after the "exclusive" press party, so I didn't miss much.
It would be interesting to see numbers on how many Apple followers viewed the release as most who have jobs and can afford the product are busy keeping those same jobs.
Another good publicity move my Mr.PR himself.

They just keep trying to convince me that they are a sect that produces cute and expensive hardware that works nicely. They know that many people who buy their products are existing apple products owners, so they give them the best service and makes them feel special. And I have the three things, so not talking out of spite :)

No. It was just a stupid and arrogant de-marketing gimmick. The fact that you are asking demonstrates that this stunt backfired.

Sure. I'm not an Apple user and frankly could not care less about the Team Apple pep rallies. Aside from that, about a million sites were covering it, so if I care to see the exciting new thing that was same as the old thing only smaller and cuter, it wasn't like I couldn't find out or anything.
